In addition to general medical consultations we are pleased to be able to provide specialist clinics and services covering the following areas:
Child Health - We encourage all children to be fully immunised. The practice nurses run immunisation clinics on Tuesday afternoons and Friday afternoons. Child development tests are carried out at eight weeks (usually at the time of the postnatal examination) and thereafter by the health visitor.
Family Planning - The doctors offer advice on all aspects of family planning during normal surgery consultations. Dr Lacy is trained to fit IUDs (coils), and implants. If you think you need emergency contraception, then this is available at most chemists.
Foreign Travel - The practice nurse can advise about health aspects of foreign travel and we can provide all necessary inoculations with the exception of yellow fever. This is rarely needed but can be arranged with a nearby surgery. Malaria prevention tablets are now only available on private prescription.
Blood Tests - A technician from the hospital laboratory service visits regularly to take blood samples. Appointments are made through reception. Appointments can also be arranged via reception for the Baldock Health Centre. You can also attend a walk-in service at the Lister Hospital.
Check-ups - Our nurses see people with diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure and heart disease in special clinic sessions. We can offer a health review to women nearing their menopause with particular emphasis on the benefits of hormone replacement therapy and osteoporosis prevention. There is also a “well man” clinic offering a medical 'MOT' for men in their middle years.
Minor Operations - There are facilities at the surgery to perform simple surgical procedures under local anaesthetic. These might include removal of worrying skin moles, treatment for ingrowing toenails, and injection of painful joints.
We are trialling a new service to make it easier for patients to access advice and treatment as quickly as possible for minor and acute problems.
Nurse Practitioner (NP) are experienced nurses who, through further education and specialist training, have developed their skills and knowledge in order to offer extended services to patients. While not being a replacement for Doctors, they can provide nursing services that incorporate some aspects of care previously provided by Doctors. Their role is to compliment the role of the GP’s. All Nurse Practitioners are Independent Nurse Prescribers which means they are able to sign their own prescriptions.
The Nurse Practitioner have advanced skills to take a health history, examine, diagnose, treat and if necessary ref patients to hospital.
They are able to provide care and prescribe for patients suffering from minor, but uncomfortable, illnesses or injuries in the clinic Theses operate on Wednesday and Fridays and are joint Nurse Practitioner/ Doctor Service.
Our advanced Nurse Practitioner can see and treat conditions such as:
Please note this is simply an indicative sample of the most common conditions this list is not exhaustive.
For Mental Health concerns such as anxiety, depression and low mood you will still need to make an appointment with a GP
If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel you need to make an appointment with the practice nurse to discuss your travel arrangements. This will include which countries and areas within countries that you are visiting to determine what vaccinations are required.
There is further information about countries and vaccinations required on the links below
It is important to make this initial appointment as early as possible - at least 6 weeks before you travel.
